Jdoramas Soon on GMA-7

During the short break, I had to keep myself from watching a new drama so I watched some reruns of American Idol on GMA-7. But lo and behold, Yamashita Tomohisa (Yamapi) was staring at me on local television!

GMA-7 aired its teasers of three Jdoramas that will be aired on Philippine tv– Nobuta Wo Produce, Proposal Daisakusen (Operation: Love) and Nodame Cantabile. I’ve already seen all three and I’m really pleased that GMA-7 got a hold of these dramas because I guarantee you that they’re really really good. This news got me on a high, enough to slightly overshadow my disappointment that the other channel will air my current K-drama obssession Boys Over Flowers.

I have yet to finish my episode recaps of Proposal Daisakusen but I promise to get back to it, hopefully before the show airs on Philippine tv.

Meanwhile, here are some bits of information about these three dramas for those who haven’t seen them.

Nobuta Wo Produce (Producing Nobuta) is a high-school drama, which aired in Japan in 2005. It stars popular J-pop stars Kamenashi Kazuya (Kiritani Shuji) and Yamashita Tomohisa (Kusano Akira) and a very young Horikita Maki (Kotani Nobuko).

Kiritani Shuji is a guy who gets along with everyone in school except for the weird Kusano Akira. Akira however treats Shuji as his bestfriend. One day Kotani Nobuko, a girl with no self-confidence, goes to their school. Shuji and Akira team up to make Nobuta, as they fondly call Nobuko, the most popular girl in school. The drama revolves around the touching relationship between these three unlikely friends.

If you could go back in time to change things, will you be able to win the heart of the one you love? This is the theme of Proposal Daisakusen (Operation: Love), a light-hearted romance starring Yamapi (Yamashita Tomohisa of Nobuta Wo Produce) and the lovely Nagasawa Masami.

Iwase Ken (Yamapi) and Yoshida Rei (Masami) have been bestfriends since elementary school. The two harbor feelings towards each other but have failed to push their relationship to the next level until Ken finds himself attending Rei’s wedding. Through the help of a “fairy,” Ken goes back in time to win the heart of the girl he loves.

Nodame Cantabile is a live-action adaptation of a popular manga starring Ueno Juri (Noda Megumi/Nodame) and Tamaki Hiroshi (Chiaki Shinichi).

Nodame is an extremely talented pianist who prefers to play by ear than read notes. She then meets her match Shinichi, a perfectionist who ambitions to become a conductor. Nodame quickly falls for the arrogant Shinichi but will he fall for her too?

Proposal Daisakusen Episode 4: Can I marry you if I give you my second button?

At the wedding reception, Eri approaches Ken and asks him whom he gave his second button to. Ken reminisces the time he gave it to a girl who asked for it.

Tada-sensei asks Rei if she ever wanted to receive a second button from anyone. She answers yes but that she didn’t get it. She remembers the time she saw Ken’s uniform was missing its second button.

Eri tells Ken that she had a feeling Rei wanted to have his second button.
Ken wonders if things would have been different if he had given his second button to Rei. Yousei appears before him and allows him to go back in time again.

Ken goes back to the time when he was being prodded to give his second button. He holds on to it but is forced by Mikio and Tsuru to give it away.

Eri and Rei talk about how disappointing and boring their graduation ceremony was. Tsuru gives Eri his second button but she tells him that she doesn’t want it.

Ken is disappointed with the loss of his second button. He tries to hide it from Rei who is asking him to sign her yearbook. Rei tells him that no one would probably ask for his second button so just like in junior high, she’d probably take it from him out of charity.

Ken asks Tsuru and Mikio’s help to get back his button. They devise a plan to get it back.

Meanwhile, Rei explains to Eri why second buttons are that important. Rei tells her it’s because the second button is the closest to the heart. The uniform is something you wear all throughout your high school life so the second button is filled with the person’s feelings. Eri wonders if Rei wants someone’s second button but Rei refuses to tell her who that person is. Rei says the closer you are to that person, the further you are from his second button.

Tada-sensei visits them in school and chats with Eri and Rei about graduation. He tells them about the mark he left in school before he graduated. The three of them go to the chemistry laboratory and find the table in which Tada-sensei carved his name.

Meantime, Tsuru, Mikio and Ken kneel in front of the girl to ask for Ken’s second button back. The girl admits that she only made a bet with her friends and collected as much second buttons as can. She identifies Ken’s button because of the crack and returns it to him but Tsuru gets to it first and throws it over the window. Tsuru is upset because he thinks the girl has made a fool out of them.

Outside, Ken searches desperately for his button. Mikio wonders why Ken is so keen on looking for a button that he already gave to someone else. Ken realizes that the button is meaningless.

Ino-sensei gives the graduation rites for the baseball team.

Before leaving school, Tsuru gives Eri all the buttons of his uniform. As they’re about to go out, Rei notices that Ken’s second button is missing. She pretends that she’s okay with it and that she’s happy Ken found someone else who wants the button.

Mikio’s girlfriend arrives to pick him up and gives him a duplicate key.
At Shogun’s Burger, the girls discuss their disappointment over their graduation ceremony.

They decide to go back to school to do the things they’ve never done before. The five of them sit on the principal’s chair, make coffee in the chemistry lab, play bowling in the school corridor and bury a time capsule under the cherry blossoms. Ken thinks about how happy the five of them are when they’re together.

Mikio, Ken, Eri and Rei go up the rooftop and see Tsuru writing the words “I like Eri” on the baseball field. Ken admires Tsuru’s honesty. As they’re about to leave, Ken stops them and tells them there’ s one more thing they haven’t done yet.

They go back to the baseball field and the three guys appear in their baseball uniforms. Tsuru pitches and Ken hits a homerun.

The whole baseball team appears and they give the graduation rights for baseball managers Eri and Rei. They present the two with flowers and fake certificates. The two are touched by the gesture.

Before leaving the field, Rei notices something inside her cylinder. She opens it and sees the second button of Ken’s baseball uniform. Rei is deeply touched.
As they pose for a photo, Ken tries to tell Rei that he likes her but he runs out of time and is transported back to the present.

At the reception, Tada-sensei asks Rei whether she received a second button during graduation. She tells him that she got a weird one.

Ken asks Yousei why it’s so difficult to change things. He answers that a human’s heart is not a simple thing to change.

Next photo on the slideshow was taken during a spring in college. Ken remembers that Rei slapped him because he tried to kiss her as a joke.

Proposal Daisakusen Episode 3: Can I marry you if I switch seats?

Ken wonders why he was crying in the photo during Tada-san’s last day at their school. Yousei then appears and grants Ken his third Hallelujah chance.

Ken goes back to the time they were doing a human pyramid in school for their gymnastics class. He looks on as Rei drinks from the fountain. Charmed by her, Ken is determined to let Rei know his feelings. But just when he’s about to confess, Tsuru and Mikio gets in the way and pushes him to confess to Cameron, the other teacher trainee. Rei looks pissed as Mikio and Tsuru describe how Ken has been dreaming about Cameron.

The five of them list the things they know about Tada-san after his two-week training but they couldn’t think of much since Tada-san always kept to himself. Eri reveals having a crush on Tada-san.

Meanwhile, Ken tries again to confess to Rei but he hesitates, making Rei think that he’s about to push all his school duties to her again.

In class, Tada-san teaches trigonometry but no one seems to be interested. Ken busies himself with computing his and Rei’s compatibility. He’s thrilled when he gets a 94 percent compatibility score.
Eri, on the other hand, tries to express her liking for Tada-san but Tada-san mistakes it for a geometry question.

The five of them talk about how Tada-san seems to have no real interest on the students.

Cameron and Eri face off in their colored jumpsuits.

Back in class, Tada-san continues his explanation about symmetry. Rei reminds Ken about his turn to erase the board but Ken won’t budge so Rei goes and erases Tada-san’s notes. Rei tells Tada-san that the students aren’t interested in curves and if he continues what he’s doing, the distance between him and the students will never be shortened. She compares Tada-san to a parallel line. Ken goes to help Rei and sees Tada-san’s copy of their class seat plan. Suddenly, Ken remembers that he was the one who created the chance for Tada-san to open up to the class after letting everyone see the seat plan. This time, Ken decides to hide the seat plan.

The class makes a survey on whether they should give flowers to Tada-sensei on his last day in school. A majority of them votes not to do so, including Ken.

Tsuru and Mikio bring Cameron to Ken and they urge him to confess but Ken gets dumped even before he says anything. Rei teases Ken for getting dumped and the two get into an argument.

At homeroom, Tsuru suggests to Tada-sensei that it’s time for them to change seats and that they should choose their preferred seats this time instead of drawing lots. Ken and Rei do not participate at first but Ken gives in when he sees Rei opening up to the idea.

All the boys are asked to go out as the girls choose where they want to sit. Tsuru asks Ken to hoist him up to see where Eri is sitting. Mikio tricks him and gives him the wrong information. It’s the boys‘ turn now to choose seats. Ken thinks about going back to his original seat beside Rei but Mikio reserves a seat for him. Ken looks longingly at Rei who has gone back to her original seat.

Eri asks Rei if she felt relieved that Ken got dumped by Cameron. Rei denies getting worried and tells her that she knew Ken would get dumped.

Ken gets frustrated over his failure again. He wonders why he couldn’t do a simple thing as to sit beside Rei.

Ken talks to Tada-san while taking the trash out. He tells Ken that he feels disappointed over how his training went. Tada-san wonders whether becoming a teacher is the right road for him. Ken cheers him up and tells him to become a great teacher that everyone looks up to. In return, Tada-san tells Ken to live his high school life to the fullest and to not leave behind any regrets. Before they part, Tada-san asks him whether the students gave him any nickname but Ken tells him that he doesn’t have one. Tada-san narrates to Ken that since he was a kid, only one person, a childhood friend, has ever called him by a special nickname. Ken remembers the first time he met Rei and she called him Ken-zou.

Back in class, Ken makes an excuse of not being able to see at the back so he asks Ito-sensei if he could switch seats with Socrates who now sits beside Rei.

Rei asks Ken why he wanted to sit beside her again since she finds it troublesome to be on student duty with Ken again. Rei looks for an eraser and Ken hands her one. Rei remembers the time he broke his eraser for her and they instantly became friends. She gets embarrassed when she remembers that she mistook his name for Kenzou because of how Ken broke the eraser.

Ken feels guilty for hiding Tada-san’s seat plan so he starts another survey to give him flowers. At the back of the survey is Tada-san’s seat plan where the face of each student is drawn. Tada-san even noted some of the things he knew about each student. Everyone is moved.

Before leaving, the students say goodbye to Tada-sensei and give him flowers. Rei hands him the flowers and apologizes for her harsh words to him. They invite Tada-sensei to hang out with them. The whole class takes a picture and Ken goes back to the present.

Ken gets frustrated over acting like a cupid to Rei and Tada-san. Yousei tells him not to worry because his points in Rei’s heart is now constantly rising but whether Ken could marry her is a different thing altogether.

Next photo on the slideshow was taken before their high school graduation. Ken’s uniform is missing its second button but he remembers not giving the button to Rei.

Proposal Daisakusen Episode 2: We can get married through coffee milk!?

Ken tries to remember why Rei looked so angry at him on the photo. His friends Tsuru, Eri and Mikio talk about how Ken acted like an idiot at that time. Hearing them chatter about how clueless he is made Ken remember the time when Rei told him how he doesn’t understand anything. Ken wishes he could start over again.

Yousei appears and grants him his second Hallelujah Chance.

Ken goes back to time they were busy preparing for a festival in school. He gets a wound on his elbow while working on their horror show. While sitting on his old desk, Ken sees his Randy Bass desk pad.

While Ken and Rei carry the curtains to the AV room, Ken notices that she’s in a good mood. Rei tells him that she wants some coffee milk. They were betting on whether Eri would become Miss Risshuu and Rei wanted Ken to treat her if Eri wins.

The results for the Mr. and Ms. Risshu contest are out and Eri wins. Tsuru gets upset for losing. Apparently, Eri asked the others not to vote for Tsuru because it might lower the standards of the contest. Eri is flocked by his male admirers making Tsuru all the more furious.

At lunchtime, Rei returns Ken’s Monpachi CD. She reminds him of the coffee milk he owes her. Tsuru sees the Monpachi CD and tries to borrow it from Ken. However, Rei quickly tells Ken not to lend it. Ken throws the CD in his bag and the guys go to the baseball locker room for lunch. Rei looks worriedly at Ken’s bag.

Before going to the locker room, Ken remembers Rei’s coffee milk so he goes to the cafeteria to buy one. He finds the coffee milk but doesn’t have enough money to buy it. Ken goes back to Rei to tell her he couldn’t get the coffee milk. Rei tells him that it’s okay since she didn’t pin much hope on Ken’s promise. Ken doesn’t realize it at first but then figures out that this may be the reason why Rei looked so angry with him on the photo. He runs to find a way to get her some coffee milk.

At the baseball locker room, Ken finds the boys having otsukaresen for lunch. He tries to borrow 500 yen from Mikio but Mikio refuses. He tells them that he needs to buy some coffee milk and that his future depends on it. Mikio tells him about the money they placed inside the Frankenstein head.
With the right amount of money, Ken goes back to the cafeteria only to find out that the coffee milk has sold out. He freaks out when he sees Ito Matsunori sensei drinking the last coffee milk from the cafeteria. Ken sees Rei who continues to give him the cold shoulder.

Feeling dejected, Ken thinks of a way to get the coffee milk. Mikio tells him to just buy some outside the school.

In class, Eri wonders where Ken has gone. Rei gets surprised when Mikio tells them that he went out to buy some coffee milk. Mikio wonders why Ken is so intent in buying one. He recalls how Ken sometimes acts weird like during the baseball game when he said that he came from the future. Tsuru says he could’ve hit a homerun then but Eri disagrees and tells Tsuru that he wouldn’t be able to do that with his boyfriend’s pitch. Tsuru is disheartened to learn about Eri’s boyfriend.

The girls talk about Eri’s boyfriend. Rei advises her to know the person well before going into a relationship. Eri tells her that she’s way too cautious and that she should at least give the person she likes some signs. Rei tells her that he’s too slow-witted.

Ken goes inside a bathhouse and finds a bottle of coffee milk. However, he’s told that they only sell their goods to their customers so Ken is forced to take a bath.

Eri teases Rei about Ken who’s going through great heights to get her some coffee milk. Rei seems pleased.

Back at the bathhouse, Ken finally gets to buy a bottle of coffee milk and rushes back to school. Ito sensei catches Ken and takes his bottle of coffee and drinks it.

Rei finds an upset Ken and nags him about not helping with their clean up duty. He tells her about his failed attempt to buy her coffee milk but Rei seems unimpressed. Ken apologizes for not being able to get what she wants. Rei is moved and thanks him for his efforts. Ken assumes that everything is okay but then notices that Rei seems to be sad about something.

The five of them make some paper planes and get nostalgic about the end of the school festival. Ken throws his paper plane and is scolded once again by Ito sensei for littering. He goes back to the classroom and sees the birthday greetings written on the chalkboard. They tell him to follow them at Shogun’s Burger.

Before going out, Ken listens to his Monpachi CD. He regrets not being able to do more things to make Rei happy. Suddenly, he remembers why Rei was so upset at him. He looks at the Monpachi CD cover and sees a note from Rei. The message reads the numbers “645.” Ken remembers seeing the number on one of the books that Rei borrowed from the library. He rushes off to the library and finds a Randy Bass figurine on the shelf, a birthday gift from Rei. There’s also a band-aid left for his wound.

Ken runs to Shogun’s Burger and finds everyone waiting for him. He picks on Rei for leaving such a difficult message to decipher and gives her a coupon for the coffee milk in case he forgets about it. Ken tells her that he left a secret message for her on the chalkboard and it would be best to come to school early. Tsuru, Eri and Mikio bring in Ken’s birthday cake and everyone sings him a happy birthday.

On the board, Ken’s message reads, “An important person is sitting right beside me.” Ironically, the groom, Tada sensei, who will be starting as a trainee teacher in the school, erases the message on the board.

After blowing the candles, the five of them take a picture and Ken is transported back to the wedding reception. Ken is disappointed because nothing has changed. Yousei reveals that Rei wasn’t able to see his message.

The next photo on the slideshow was taken during Tada-sensei’s last day in their school. Ken remembers how upset he was that time.

Proposal Daisakusen Episode 1: Can I get married if we had gone to the Koshien!?

* Proposal Daisakusen is a Japanese drama aired on Fuji TV from April 16 to June 24, 2007.

“The key that opens the door of miracle is in everyone’s hand. But the ones who realize that are far and few.”

A wedding is in the works while an old man looks from the balcony of the church.

Iwase Ken (Yamashita Tomohisa) wakes up late for a wedding. He rushes off and hails a taxi.

Meanwhile, the bride Yoshida Rei (Nagasawa Masami) is already dressed. She’s visited by her bestfriend Oku Eri. Eri tells Rei how she used to think that she would be the one who would get married first. To appease her, Rei asks Eri to catch her bouquet.

Ken’s taxi is stalled when a marathon causes a monstrous traffic so he decides to run instead. His friends Hisashi Tsuru, Enokido Mikio and Eri wait for Ken outside the church. Ken finally arrives and is dragged inside by Mikio and Tsuru.

The bride makes her way to the altar with Ken waiting in front. He has known Rei since primary school and has been in love with her for years. But he is not the groom in this wedding but Tada Tetsua, their teacher in training during high school

Throughout the wedding, Ken thinks about how he has always been beside Rei but never got to confess his feelings for her. Ken realizes that at the moment when you’re about to lose the person you love most in life is when you’ll realize that s/he is the one. However, for Ken it’s too late now.

The wedding is through and Eri gets to catch the bouquet. She tells her friends that she will definitely get married this year. Tsuru asks her to marry him but Eri dismisses him.

At the wedding reception, their old high school homeroom teacher Ito Matsunori makes a speech. Rei laughs at the speech while Ken looks longingly at her.

Ken and Mikio go outside to smoke. They frown at the fact that there would be more boring weddings to attend in the future. Tsuru finds them and tells them that the shopkeeper Nishio Tamotsu will be cooking his hamburgers at the reception. They used to frequent Tamotsu’s hamburger house Shogun’s Hamburger.

The old man from the church looks on as Ken continues to smoke outside.

Ken goes inside and is greeted by Rei who asks him how she looks in her wedding dress. Ken is obviously taken by her beauty but teases her instead. Rei reminds him about his speech.

Ken goes on to make his speech. He talks about how he has been friends with Rei since they were kids and how she once wrote that her dream was to become a cute bride. He congratulates her for achieving her dream and goes on to talk about her embarrassing experiences while growing up. Ken gets teary-eyed when he talks about the time he spent with Rei and how Rei has always put her friends first before her own self. He felt like crying because the vision of Rei in a wedding dress was too beautiful. Everyone in the room is deeply touched.

Next, a slideshow made by Eri and Mikio is presented. It includes pictures of Rei as a kid. They show a picture of Rei when she transferred school during Primary 3 and Ken recalls the first time he met her. They were in the same class and became seatmates.

Ken is distraught at the fact that he could not be the one beside Rei. He turns to drinking to assuage his pain, regretting that he wasn’t able to confess his love for her.

When they show a picture of them during the time they lost a baseball game in high school, Ken remembers how it was the first time he saw Rei in tears. In the picture, everyone including Rei looks awfully sad. Ken wonders whether he would be the one sitting beside Rei if he did things differently. He wishes he could go back to redo things in the past.

Suddenly, Ken sees a bright light and everything stands still. The old man appears beside him. He tells Ken that he would allow him to go back to the past to redo things with the deadline set when the photo was taken so he could live life without regrets. The old man introduces himself as a yousei (fairy). Ken hesitates to believe him at first. Yousei whispers that he only had to say “Hallellujah chance” and strike a pose in order to go back to the past.

Ken does what he’s told and is transported back to the qualifying game for the Koushien’s (National High School Baseball Competition) Kyoto competition. Ken wonders whether this is all really happening and sees Rei cheering for them. Tsuru drags Ken and hits him for spacing out. He tells Ken that they are behind by one point. Ken couldn’t believe what’s happening and thinks he drank too much.

Mikio strikes out and Ken is asked to bat next. Rei looks at him worried. Ken remembers the pitches during the game so he gets to hit the third pitch. He runs to third base and remembers that they lost the game because Tsuru was to bat next and has struck out. Ken figures he needed to change things so he goes for a homerun but fails.

At the locker room, Tsuru asks Ken why he kept on running instead of staying at third base. Ken tells them that they would have lost the game anyway because Tsuru will strike out. He tells them that he comes from the future but is mistaken for a fool.

Ken is disappointed that he couldn’t change the past. Rei finds him at the benches and teases him for losing. She tells him off for being sad all by himself and reminds him that it’s her last day as their team manager. She asks him why he continued to run because the Ken she knew wouldn’t have moved during that key moment. Ken tells her it’s because he made a promise to her that he would bring her to the nationals. Rei laughs at him but is obviously touched. She tells Ken that she never doubted he would touch home and that she would be retiring as a manager without regrets. Rei thanks Ken for working hard.

Eri calls them for a picture taking. They take a picture and Ken is transported back to the wedding.
Ken wonders whether he really went back to the past. He is shocked to see that Rei’s expression in the picture has changed and she is now happily smiling. However, Ken is disappointed that he couldn’t make any dramatic change. He asks yousei if he could go back in time again. Yousei tells him that a picture couldn’t be taken twice but implies there are other pictures in the slideshow.

Next they show a picture of Mikio, Tsuru, Eri, Ken and Rei at Shogun’s Hamburger. Ken tries to remember why Rei looked so pissed at him.
